when was netflix founded?

Netflix the largest online rental company in America was founded in 1997 by Reed Hastings & Marc Randolph.

The Live Netflix.com was launched in 1998 with an online version of a more traditional blockbuster style pay-per-rental model. Only in Sept 1999, Netflix introduced the monthly subscription model and since that time the company has built its reputation on the business model of flat-fee unlimited rentals without due dates, late fees, shipping or handling fees, or per-title rental fees.

In Denver, customers can visit the Redbox DVD machines at participating McDonald’s and rent the newest DVD movies releases for just $1.00 per night, plus tax - with no membership forms and no late fees - and return the same movies at any participating McDonald’s Denver location. The latest new DVD releases are added to the Redbox DVD rental machines every Tuesday.  McDonald’s is the first quick service restaurant to offer new DVD movie rentals to consumers, extending its legacy of introducing new and innovative ways to create relevant, satisfying, and unique customer experiences in its restaurants.

At CES in January LG and Netflix announced a collaboration that would produce a new set-top device offering Blu-ray playback as well as access to streaming movies. It looks like the new BD300 Blu-ray player from LG may be that device.

GameZnFlix, Inc. an online provider of video games and movies for rent or purchase, announces today that they will continue to carry HD-DVDs.

This decision comes on the heels of Netflix’s announcement that they no longer carry HD-DVDs by the end of this year. The decision of GameZnFlix to continue to carry HD-DVDs is based on the large number of subscribers who have purchased HD-DVD players that interface with their Microsoft Xbox 360 or own Microsoft Xbox 360 Elite.

“We want to continue to be the gamers’ choice for both movies and games,” said John Fleming, CEO of GameZnFlix. “And for us to do that we will provide for both our Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 members, who enjoy enhanced DVD experiences.”

I’m a huge fan of online movie rentals. It wasn’t many years ago that finding a good selection of DVD’s at a rental store was difficult. Once they were commonly available at stores, they were commonly unavailable by demand. Netflix enters the scene with their online rental service. Never go to the video store again, never wait in the weekend lines, get your movies fast. Of course, I wasn’t ready to give up that local access to movies, so I didn’t venture into a subscription until Blockbuster Online was released.

There are obviously many similarities between the two services, and I suspect that the determination of which service is better for you will boil down to a few simple tradeoffs, or you’ll be attracted to one of the few differentiators between the two services.

LOVEFiLM to Take Over Amazon DVD Business

Online retailer Amazon.com Inc. and DVD rental subscription company LOVEFiLM International said Monday that LOVEFiLM will acquire Amazon Europe’s DVD rental business in the U.K. and Germany.

As part of the transaction, Amazon Europe will also make a cash investment and become the largest shareholder in LOVEFiLM International Ltd. Amazon Europe will also promote LOVEFiLM on its sites for British and German customers.
